The Pfister Hotel is the most iconic hotel in Downtown Milwaukee. The luxury hotel includes 307 rooms. The hotel is owned by Marcus Corp.
In 1893 Guido Pfister and his son Charles opened , the “Grand Hotel of the West.”
In 1962 Ben Marcus purchased the hotel.
From Guides to Historic Milwaukee: Juneautown Walking Tour by Mary Ellen Pagel and Virginia Palmer (1965)…
Now the oldest hotel on Wisconsin Avenue, the Pfister is the work of yet another distinguished local architectural firm. Late Victorian tastes are evident in its Richardsonian exterior and are echoed in the lobby’s furnishings, high gold-leafed ceilings, and potted palms. A gift of T. A. Chapman, the bronze lions guarding the stairway in the lobby were once so familiar a sight at the front entrance that they were dubbed Dick and Harry by Milwaukeeans. Like the recent addition to Northwestern National, the new wing of the Pfister is thoroughly modern in design yet harmonizes with the forms off the late 19th-century structure.
A large addition was completed in 1965. The addition was designed by Rasche, Schroeder, Spransy and Associates. The 1965 addition includes a 260 stall parking garage.
