Spring Gallery Night and Day to be held April 15 and 16, 2016

This spring, the quarterly event showcases 49 venues throughout the downtown Milwaukee area.

Presented by the Historic Third Ward Association, the 28-year-old Gallery Night and Day is the premier art event in Milwaukee for both the avid gallery goer and the beginning admirer. An evening of gallery hopping and art viewing begins Friday, April 15 and continues during the day on Saturday, April 16. This spring, the quarterly event showcases 49 venues throughout the downtown Milwaukee area. Admission is free to all venues during event hours listed below.

MADA GALLERIES

1) DEAN JENSEN GALLERY – (759 N. Water St. – 414.278.7100 – deanjensengallery.com) Jason S. Yi: TERRAFORMJason S. Yi fully transforms the Dean Jensen Gallery’s main street floor space with an installation titled “Terraform,” a word loosely meaning a new and/or altered space for human visitation or habitation. In the artist’s own words, the intention of his large, ambitious, immersive creation is to challenge viewers with “conflicting contexts of place, setting, and their own sense of orientation….” A multi-disciplinary artist, Yi has a wide reputation for creating works that not only employ such traditional media as painting, drawing, photography, and video, but also, surprisingly, such Home Depot-purchased whatnots as Styrofoam, plastic sheeting, pegboards and electrical wiring. Yi is a professor at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and a recent recipient of a coveted Joan Mitchell Foundation award. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Milwaukee, as well as in such countries as China, Japan, Korea, Austria and Italy. 3) TORY FOLLIARD GALLERY – (233 N. Themes of the subconscious mind, fantastic imagery, and strange juxtapositions are elements of Surrealism today and continue to influence many contemporary art forms. 4) WALKER’S POINT CENTER FOR THE ARTS – (839 S. 5th St. – 414.672.2787 – wpca-milwaukee.orgIn Light We Trust. An exhibition featuring analog/alternative photographic work, by artists Carissa Heinrichs, Martin Morante, Hal Rammel and Vicki Reed, in pinhole, cyanotype and other alternative and analog techniques and media. Exhibition runs April 1though May 14. The artists will give a presentation at 7pm on Gallery Night. Featured Member Exhibition: Brad Krause. Opening reception of Brad Krause’s solo exhibition, featuring his mythical surrealism paints based on mythology and folklore. Exhibition runs April 15 through July 9. Hsin-Lin’s paintings form an intimate expression of life, revealing its beauty, complexities, and contradictions. Her objective is to articulate the intricacies of everyday life, looking beneath the surface of norms and beliefs, while always remaining connected to nature. Exhibition runs April 15 to July 16. 6) GROHMANN MUSEUM – (1000 N. Broadway – 414.277.2300 –  msoe.edu/grohmannmuseumLAST CHANCE TO SEE Art of the North Shore Line before it leaves the station! With its rapid expansion in the 1920s, The Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad set the standard for electric interurban transit in America; no railway could compare to the ‘North Shore Line.’ The North Shore Line also established itself as a leader in marketing with a highly successful print ad and poster campaign featuring the work of designers Willard Frederic Elmes, Oscar Rabe Hanson, and Ervine Metzl, among others. Assembled from the collection of the Milwaukee Public Library and a number of private collections, this exhibition features many of these memorable posters along with photographs, prints and ephemera from the height of the North Shore Line’s success. 7) HOTEL METRO – (411 E. Mason St. – 414.272.1937 – hotelmetro.com) Hotel Metro will feature local artists from the Wisconsin Visual Artists – Southeast Chapter and other local artists. WVA is the oldest juried member art organization in Wisconsin and members work in a variety of art forms. Happy hour drink and food specials extended until 10pm. Sophia’s Heart will perform at 6pm. 8) MILWAUKEE LGBT COMMUNITY CENTER – (1110 N. Market St., 2nd Floor – 414.271.2656 –mkelgbt.orgART AND THE ENVIRONMENT. Gallery installation by Mike Kasun inspired by his love of nature. His work will feature poems, sculpture, and images. Nature photography by photographer Kathie Solie. Her vivid colorful images include birds, trees and structures. Contemporary urban assemblage by Thom Ertl from his series L3TT3RS & NUMB3RS. Textile artist Cheryl Ann Sitzler will use her love of patterns and wood to express her reverence for nature and the human story. Friday: 5 to 8pm

14) ACLU OF WISCONSIN – (207 E. Buffalo St., Suite 325 – 414.272.4032 – aclu-wi.orgJuxtapose. Juxtapose, funded by the Wisconsin Arts Board, showcases mixed media artwork produced by young community artists in conjunction with the ACLU. Photos, prints, and spoken word performances highlight contrasting portrayals of Milwaukee, juxtaposing parts of the city that are thriving with those that are challenged. Friday: 5 to 10pm, Saturday: noon to 4pm

15) ART UPSTAIRS GALLERY – (207 E. Buffalo St., Suite 202 – 262.243.5921) Carbon, Color and Calligraphy: Uncovering the Unconscious. Guest Artist: VICTORIA BEIN Ms. Bein’s intricately textured pastel and carbon pencil drawings explore and uncover her unconscious world. Blending representational elements with abstraction she emphasizes linear marks and transparency within forms. Also paintings by Patricia Gilman Graham and Lois Buley Wirth. This mixed media assemblage work is inspired by a steampunk aesthetic and Milwaukee architecture, vintage imagery, found objects and the brands that helped make this city famous. 27) PORTRAIT SOCIETY GALLERY– (207 E. Buffalo St., 5th Floor – 414.870.9930 –portraitsocietygallery.comAgency, Industry, Infinity. Portrait Society introduces two new artists, Robin Jebavy and Rosemary Ollison, in an exhibition that explores domestically situated or themed productivity. Robin Jebavy (b. 1981) creates large scale paintings from still life arrangements of glassware. Jebavy repeats, enlarges, and multiplies patterns into elegant, ornate compositions. Milwaukee-based Rosemary Ollison, who is self-taught, draws, weaves, stitches crazy quilts and clothing, builds sculptures out of duct tape, makes rugs, three dimensional fabric objects and writes poetry. His work has been displayed at numerous restaurants, businesses and even in homes. Erik has revamped a few business websites from big named businesses throughout Milwaukee. 34) ALPHABANG! ART SPACE – (228 S. 1st St. – 414.517.2789) Street Musicians: A Photographic Exhibition by Tony Frontier. This is an exhibition of phenomenal musicians from around the world. Some may lack in technical proficiency, but is compensated with an energy, emotion, and humanity that transcends today’s digitized, auto-tuned world. They all have a story to tell. ReStore’s 7th Annual Recycled Art Contest challenges the public to create works primarily using the donated product found at ReStore. 40) THE IRON HORSE HOTEL – (500 W. His work most often explores the theme “identity” whether he is photographing inanimate dolls, other inanimate objects or people. This April, Shaker’s Cigar Bar transforms the second & third floor of the speakeasy and brothel to host “The Red Light District”, an exhibition that manifests the historic metamorphosis of Milwaukee’s identity of underground scandals, conflict, murder and prostitution. Leon Travanti has spent much of his adult life traveling the globe. His artistic influences have been culled from trips to China, India, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, and Turkey. Travanti will exhibit artwork inspired by the cultures of these various countries. In addition, the artist will showcase some of the folk art, textiles, and costumes that he has collected during his wanderings. Exhibition runs April 14 through July 13. About 20 resident artists will conduct various hands on workshops including cyanotype, experimental printmaking and accordion bookmaking.     Rosemary Ollison’s show at The Portrait Society has a reception on April 1, 2016, but – as you’ve read above – will also be up during Gallery Night and Day. A vibrant show – I for one, will come to see it! And thank you for this article, which is very helpful when trying to figure out where to go on Gallery Night!
