Yesterday, spurred by the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha and other officer-involved incidents, athletes across the sports world took a stand and refused to play in support of racial justice. These efforts were led by the Milwaukee Bucks and Brewers in their respective sports, and we couldn’t be more proud of our local athletes for using their platform to help spread an important message.

The Bucks and Brewers showed courage and leadership regarding these issues that continue to impact our communities, and we hope those with wide-reaching platforms do the same to help push this moment past conversations and toward action.

In a statement the Bucks players said, “When we take the court and represent Milwaukee and Wisconsin, we are expected to play at a high level, give maximum effort and hold each other accountable. We hold ourselves to that standard, and in this moment, we are demanding the same from our lawmakers and law enforcement.”

As local elected officials we wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment, and as a body the Common Council will continue to push for meaningful reform and urge others at the state and federal level to do the same.
