Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II is inviting the public to attend the grand opening this Saturday (October 2) of “Taste of Lindsay Heights,” a carryout café featuring cuisine from local food entrepreneurs.

The café, located at 1617 W. North Ave., will celebrate the grand opening on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a brief ribbon cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m.

Alderman Stamper said the café is owned and operated by Walnut Way Conservation Corps, a resident-driven, nonprofit organization promoting work, wealth and wellness within the Lindsay Heights community. “I am delighted by this new venture, a part of Walnut Way’s strategy to help food entrepreneurs grow their businesses and offer fresh, healthy foods within our community,” Alderman Stamper said.

“I strongly encourage the community to come out on Saturday for the grand opening event,” the alderman said.

Featured entrepreneurs represent a wide array of tastes and styles including Jamaican-inspired ginger beers, fresh-pressed juices, rum cakes, fruit dips, and much more. The café will have a regular menu and feature “pop-ups” for new entrepreneurs to test and promote their products. The youngest entrepreneur is Kyric Burt, 11 years old, owner of Kyric’s Lemonade.

Walnut Way is partnering with United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee and Milwaukee Center for Independence on the workforce development components of the project, and the Taste of Lindsay Heights is part of Walnut Way’s “Community Wealth Building” campaign to identify resident skills and assets and help them turn these into economic opportunities. Walnut Way is also partnering with other tenants of The Wellness Commons, where Taste of Lindsay Heights resides, to offer workforce and employment support.

The Milwaukee Center for Independence (MCFI) is sharing kitchen facilities for chefs, and United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee (UNCOM) is assisting with café staffing through their Employ Milwaukee workforce program.

Participating food entrepreneurs include Poundcakes by Paula, GLDN HNY, Inc., Kreative Fruitz, Simple Snacks, Kyric’s Lemonade, Aunt Manda’s Beverages, as well as Funky Fresh Eggrolls. The café will also feature other local talents in the form of “Pop Up’s.
