Target in Downtown Milwaukee
With the announcement that Target is opening a CityTarget store on State Street in Chicago's The Loop Neighborhood, the idea of a downtown Milwaukee Target has been generating a considerable amount of buzz in the past few weeks. Unfortunately for those wishing to shop at a downtown Target, none of that buzz has come from Target. Assuming Target was interested though, what location and store format would best match the desires of Target-loving shoppers with the needs of the city to continue to develop a healthy urban core in and around downtown? Let's explore.

Milwaukee County Taking First Steps Towards Open Government
To say that access to Milwaukee County records has been less than transparent is an understatement. Milwaukee County's committee agendas are poorly formatted, currently contain little information, lack the associated public input documentation, and almost no committee meetings are carried on TV, so the context and history of legislation is often difficult to ascertain.

Walker’s Point Senior Housing Development Project Renderings

Mercy Housing is Planning a Walker’s Point Building
Mercy Housing Lakefront is proposing a five-story apartment building, which would be located at the Southeast corner of 1st St. and Pittsburgh Ave. in Walker's Point. This 55 unit apartment building is intended to serve independent adults 55 and older with incomes ranging between 30% and 60% of the area median income.

Momentum Building on South 2nd Street?
Momentum, development, and a touch of new life on South 2nd Street in Walker's Point? Yes. The complete street redesign for S. 2nd St., was just the start. Although there is still work to be completed, the street has re-opened to two-way traffic, the bike lanes have been painted, the grass has been planted, and the wider sidewalks are in place. And now there are signs of new life on the street.

Gallun Tannery Site Presents Opportunity and Challenges
Milwaukee is in the process of losing a historic landmark, the remaining tannery buildings of the former A.F. Gallun & Sons Company tannery are being demolished on the city's Lower East Side. The buildings once housed one of the city's many tanning businesses, but in a few weeks all that will remain is the redeveloped office building on the south side of North Water Street.

Can Downtown Milwaukee Support a 24-Hour Gym?
Downtown Milwaukee is blessed with four full-service, affordable fitness centers. The Wisconsin Athletic Club, Downtown YMCA, Bally Total Fitness, and newcomer Gold's Gym most of which are located along the Wisconsin Avenue corridor that is the heart of the central business district. They vary in size and services, but all are large gyms that provide personal training services. Given that downtown is well served by three full-service gyms, is there a market for a small, no-frills 24-hour gym?

Marriott Hotel Project Wins Appeal on 3-2 Vote at Zoning Committee
At yesterday's meeting of the Zoning, Neighborhoods & Development Committee Jackson Street Management LLC won an appeal of the Historic Preservation Commission's ruling regarding their request to demolish five buildings within the East Side Commercial Historic District to make way for a new Marriott Hotel.
