Menomonee and Milwaukee River Course Challenges High School, Collegiate and Club Teams of Fours and Eights

(MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, August 14, 2023) – The 22nd Annual Milwaukee River Challenge will take place on Saturday, September 16th beginning at 9 am for men’s and women’s teams of fours and eights and will conclude by 2 pm. This difficult 3-mile course on the Menomonee and Milwaukee Rivers attracts high school, collegiate and club teams from throughout the Midwest. The start of each race begins at 25th and Canal Streets on the Menomonee River and heads east where it makes a sharp left turn north on the Milwaukee River navigating narrow passageways under ten bridges which makes this race particularly challenging for competitors. The course passes through the heart of downtown Milwaukee and the finish line is just south of Pleasant Street adjacent to Schlitz Park. Women’s 4s begins the day followed by men’s 8s, women’s 8s and concludes with men’s 4s in the early afternoon.

The Milwaukee River Challenge attracts some of the best high school teams in the region as well competitive shells from the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) and The Milwaukee Rowing Club on their home course. There are excellent vantage points for spectators including the Harley-Davidson Museum grounds, the exciting 90 degree turn at Water Street in the Historic Third Ward and Pere Marquette Park. Restaurants and bars along the Riverwalk provide a fun place to catch the action while enjoying brunch, lunch or a beverage. The Cherry Street Bridge, adjacent to Schlitz Park, is an excellent spot to view teams making a push to the finish. Visitors can hear a running commentary throughout the day at Schlitz Park provided by seasoned race veterans as well as the opportunity to purchase food and beverages and mingle with race teams.

The regatta is presented by Schlitz Park and sponsored by the Milwaukee Riverwalk District in conjunction with The Milwaukee Rowing Club. Other 2023 partners include: Beer Capitol/Miller Coors, Wisconsin Preservation Fund, Inc., Sunflower Investments, Riverwalk Dentistry, Gilbane Building Company, Titan Building Company, KEI – Kujawa Enterprises, Inc., Mandel Group, MSOE – Milwaukee School of Engineering, La Lune Collection, Westown Association and Baird.

Schlitz Park Run by the River, Thursday, September 14, 2023, Kicks Off the Weekend! Race weekend officially begins at 6:15 pm on Thursday, September 14, 2023. Beginning with the Schlitz Park ‘Run by the River’ 5k run/2-mile walk event. Suited with a new name, on its 10th anniversary. Run by the River is the only 5k in Downtown Milwaukee. The route takes participants along the Riverwalk, around the Schlitz Park office campus and through Brewer’s Hill Neighborhood. Run by the River concludes at The Tap Yard – a beer garden at Schlitz Park. Hosting live music and a selection of beers on tap.

The race is open to individuals and corporate teams at a cost of $30.00 Each runner/walker will receive a custom t-shirt, race bib and a token for a free beer at The Tap Yard of course.

All proceeds, raised by 5k participants in and race sponsors alike, will go to the 2023’s beneficiary: College Possible. A non-profit who empowers students of underrepresented communities to begin and excel on their journey of earning a college degree. Last year, Run by the River, raised an incredible $25,000 for the 2022 beneficiary: The Donald Driver Foundation. Making it their most successful fundraiser to-date.
