On Monday, August 24, 2020, after a discussion with Executive Director Griselda Aldrete of the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission, Acting Chief Michael Brunson decided to move forward with the Internal Affairs Division’s internal investigation of Police Officer Michael Mattioli.

Officer Mattioli was criminally charged by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office on May 13, 2020, for his involvement in the death of Joel Acevedo. The Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission took over the Internal Affairs Division investigation on May 19, 2020, and received all MPD documents related to the incident.

The Fire and Police Commission has indicated that their staff has concluded the investigation and scheduled a trial. However, the FPC will cancel the upcoming trial to allow MPD to complete its investigation and render an appropriate disposition based on the facts of the case.
