A Stronger Milwaukee Starts With Strong Local Journalism
And we need you to build that strong Milwaukee.

What makes a city stronger? It’s not just new buildings, better roads or economic development. It’s also an informed public, an accountable government and residents who understand the decisions shaping their community.
Research has shown that communities with strong local journalism tend to have higher rates of civic participation. Residents are more likely to vote. Public officials face greater scrutiny. Government operates with greater transparency. And debates about the future are grounded in shared facts, rather than rumors or speculation.
That’s the work Urban Milwaukee does every day.
We attend the Common Council meetings where decisions about your tax dollars are made. We examine development proposals that could transform neighborhoods. We follow city budgets, public investments, housing policies, permit requests and transportation projects. We ask questions of elected officials, scrutinize public records and explain complicated issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.
And we do it with a distinctly Milwaukee perspective.
Our job is to connect those dots, give residents the context they need and hold decision-makers accountable.
That’s why local journalism is a form of civic infrastructure, every bit as essential to a healthy city as its roads, libraries and schools. Without it, important decisions can happen with little public awareness. Promises can go unexamined. Residents lose a vital tool for understanding and influencing the community around them.
Milwaukee deserves better than that.
But producing independent, in-depth local journalism takes resources. It takes reporters who can spend hours in public meetings, dig through government documents, ask difficult questions and follow stories long after the initial announcement. It takes a newsroom committed to covering Milwaukee not just when something spectacular happens, but on the ordinary days when consequential decisions are quietly being made.
That’s where you come in.
An Urban Milwaukee membership isn’t simply a subscription to a website. It’s an investment in the civic infrastructure that makes Milwaukee a stronger, more informed and more accountable city.
It helps ensure that someone is watching City Hall, following the money, questioning assumptions and telling the stories that shape Milwaukee’s future. It funds a reporter to dig into court records, not press releases.
If you believe Milwaukee’s future matters, if you want decisions made in the open and if you believe residents deserve more than official talking points, become an Urban Milwaukee member today.
A better-informed Milwaukee is a stronger Milwaukee and strong local journalism makes that possible.
