Saint James Court Historic Apartments Celebrates 110 Years & Placement on National Register of Historic Places
On Tuesday, October 1st at 5pm, Alderman Robert Bauman will participate with Milwaukee historic preservation aficionados, Westown stakeholders, officials from Marquette University and building residents in celebrating Saint James Court’s 110th anniversary and placement unto the National Register of Historic Places.
On Tuesday, October 1st at 5pm, Alderman Robert Bauman will participate with Milwaukee historic preservation aficionados, Westown stakeholders, officials from Marquette University and building residents in celebrating Saint James Court’s 110th anniversary and placement unto the National Register of Historic Places. Alderman Bauman will share insight regarding Saint James Court and on the role of historic buildings in downtown redevelopment. The presentation will take place at 825 31 West Wisconsin Avenue.
Saint James Court is a Neo-Classical, Beaux Art-influenced building which was designed in 1895 by the prominent Milwaukee architectural firm of Ferry and Clas. The design was influenced by certain concepts of the “City Beautiful” movement which had been featured at the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. In 1903, when the land became available, the Saint James Court Apartments were built on Milwaukee’s main street, Wisconsin Avenue. Alfred Clas of Ferry and Clas and numerous well known Milwaukeeans lived at Saint James Court over the years.
Saint James Court stands at a special place on Wisconsin Avenue. This place, with its Court of Honor in the boulevard, venerable churches, the heavily-used and monumental Central Library, the popular Wisconsin Club and the Saint James Court building, is a living example of how built examples of City Beautiful principles continue to combine aesthetics and function to create a framework for Society.
Saint James Court has been completely restored in accordance with the US Department of Interior’s standards for historic renovation. The Saint James Court Building contains 30 vintage apartments of various sizes. Character abounds with hardwood floors, decorative fireplaces, stained glass, claw foot tubs, high ceilings, a mahogany and marble entrance, a completely restored vintage elevator, etc. Saint James also has a colorful and well maintained flower garden that has won two Mayor’s Awards. On the building’s ground level is office space which is currently being updated. The first suite of this updated office space, 825 W. Wisconsin, is ready for occupancy this October.
In 1994, when Hennessy Group began restoring the Saint James Court building, a logo featuring a lady modeled after the art of Alphonse Mucha was adopted. A forty foot tall banner bearing this lady has been hung on the building’s west side ever since. This year, a new banner was created by Mike McGuiness of Caravella Paintwork’s Art Division. This banner is unique, original, and an outstanding example of art’s making a unique contribution related not only to Saint James Court but also to the exciting revitalization of Milwaukee’s West Wisconsin Avenue.
