After a temporary pause, Wisconsin’s Help for Homeowners program has been extended through December 30. This unique program provides grants of up to $40,000 to income-eligible Wisconsin homeowners who have not been able to keep up with their mortgage, utility bills and/or property tax payments. Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II and Alderman Khalif J. Rainey are encouraging eligible local residents in need of assistance to take advantage of this opportunity. If you had previously started an application, you will now be able to complete and submit your application (by December 30).

“Our community is still very much recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the new Wisconsin Help for Homeowners program can serve as a vital lifeline to those who may be struggling with mortgage payments, local property taxes or utilities,” Alderman Stamper said. “I would encourage all homeowners to review the eligibility requirements and take advantage of this funding if it can be of help to you and your family.”

Qualifications for the Wisconsin Help for Homeowners program include:

  1. If you are a Wisconsin homeowner living in a single-family home, duplex, condo or factory-built home.
  2. You have been financially impacted as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic since January 21, 2020.
  3. Your household income is at or below 100% of the county median. Check your income here.
  4. You can find much more information and a link to an online application here.

“The pandemic has negatively impacted tens of thousands of Wisconsin homeowners, and Milwaukee has seen its share of devastating impacts. If you, a loved one, or anyone you know is in need, please, use the link and apply,” Alderman Rainey said.

Wisconsin’s Help for Homeowners program has so far distributed over $18.7 million to help more than 2,900 Wisconsin homeowners stay in their homes, catch up on bills, and avoid foreclosure.

Those eligible can fill out and submit an online application by visiting https://homeownerhelp.wi.gov/. (Language options are available for English, Spanish, Hmong, and Somali). You can also call 1-855-2-HOME-WI to get additional information or find out how to apply in person. Applications are open on a first-come, first-served basis.
