Milwaukee County Historical Society to Host Inaugural Janice and Stephen Marcus Public Art Award Ceremony
Milwaukee’s rich history, vibrant culture, and artistic innovation are reflected in its diverse public art. From historical bronze markers to contemporary murals, these works transform ordinary spaces into cultural landmarks, fostering community pride and preserving the city’s unique heritage. Recognizing the importance of public art in shaping Milwaukee’s identity, the Milwaukee County Historical Society is proud to introduce the Janice and Stephen Marcus Public Art Award, an annual recognition of public art that holds exceptional historical significance.
[inarticled]Earlier this year, the Historical Society invited the public to submit nominations for public art that best reflects Milwaukee County’s history, values, and character. A distinguished panel of jurors – Jeffrey Morin, President of the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design; Marcela Garcia, Executive Director of Walker’s Point Center for the Arts; and Andy Nunemaker, renowned art collector and advocate – carefully reviewed the nominations and selected three outstanding finalists whose work embodies the resilience, diversity, and creativity of our community. The finalists include:
- Sherman Park Rising by Tia Richardson (Sherman Park) – A vibrant mural honoring the perseverance and strength of the Sherman Park neighborhood.
- Green Flow by Pamela Scesniak (Brady Street) – A visually striking piece celebrating Brady Street’s history and preserving the neighborhood’s unique stories.
- Mural of Peace by Reynaldo Hernandez (Walker’s Point) – A powerful tribute to the diversity and aspirations of Milwaukee’s South Side.
The winner of the Janice and Stephen Marcus Public Art Award will be announced at a special award ceremony on April 16, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Milwaukee County Historical Society. The evening will feature a presentation of the finalists, remarks from the jurors, and a formal award announcement. Guests will also enjoy a reception with live music, appetizers, and a cash bar.
This award is made possible through the generous support of Janice and Stephen Marcus, whose commitment to the arts and Milwaukee’s cultural heritage ensures that significant public art continues to be honored and preserved.
