Mayor Names Three to Senior Positions in City Government
Promotions Elevate Current Employees into New Responsibilities
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson has appointed Steven Mahan to the recently created position of Deputy Director of the Department of Administration. In his new role, Mahan will work alongside Director Preston Cole overseeing a wide range of government functions including budgeting, purchasing, information technology, the Office of Equity and Inclusion, Community Wellness and Safety, lobbying efforts, Block Grant, and Environmental Collaboration.
“I have asked the Department of Administration to take on increasing responsibilities in city government, and, to effectively oversee these functions, I am tapping into Steven’s talents and depth of knowledge,” Mayor Johnson said. “Steve brings unmatched experience within DOA, and he has my full confidence.”
Mahan joined Milwaukee city government more than a quarter-century ago, and for most of that time he has led a division within DOA, the Community Development Grants Administration. He earned a Masters in Business Administration degree from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, and for more than fifteen years has worked as an adjunct professor at UWM’s Department of Education Policy and Community Studies.
Mayor Johnson has nominated Mario Higgins to take on the position of Director at the Community Development Grants Administration. Higgins first joined the department in 2002 and has served, most recently, as the Associate Director there. Higgins, too, is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. He serves on community advisory boards at both the Medical College of Wisconsin and Versiti.
Additionally, the Mayor has nominated Molly King as the next Employee Benefits Director. With more than fifteen years of city government experience, King is currently the Fiscal and Administration Policy Director in the Mayor’s Office. She has served on the city’s Pension Board, Deferred Compensation Board and the Procurement Review Board. King is a graduate of Hofstra University and is currently a candidate for a Masters in Accounting and Finance.
“In Mario Higgins and Molly King, I am elevating individuals who have demonstrated success in several positions within city government,” Mayor Johnson said. “I look forward to both joining my cabinet in their new roles.”
The appointment of both Higgins and King are subject to confirmation by Milwaukee’s Common Council. Their nominations will be considered in upcoming Council meetings.
