Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Patience Roggensack wrote that an injured worker who was partially disabled by surgery following a workplace injury should be compensated for that disability. Roggensack was on the losing end of that 4-3 decision, which denied worker’s compensation to Tracie Flug. Roggensack is seen here at the State of the State address in Madison, Wis., on Jan. 10, 2017. • The Cannabis Question: Pot Possession Charges Cause Big Problems

Across Wisconsin, there were more than 17,000 arrests for marijuana possession and more than 1,800 arrests for marijuana sales in 2018. Arrest and conviction records can make it harder to get jobs, professional licenses, housing, financial aid for higher education and government assistance. • Company Charged With Forced Labor of Mexicans

Mexican farm workers told federal investigators that farm labor contractors yelled at them to work faster and refused medical help when they were sick. Some men passed out in the fields, they said, and the supervisors would not let their fellow workers move them into the shade. The contractor was charged in May with allegedly trafficking the laborers at a southeastern Wisconsin farm. Illustrations were used for this story to conceal workers’ identities to protect them from potential retaliation. Illustration by Emily Shullaw for Wisconsin Watch.
