Going dark for justice
Statement from members of the Milwaukee Common Council – Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II, Alderwoman Chantia Lewis, Alderman Ashanti Hamilton, Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd and Alderman Khalif J. Rainey
We are proudly displaying Black screens at today’s Common Council meeting as a reminder of what we have always known to be true, Black Lives Matter.
As the video of Jacob Blake, who was shot seven times in the back by a Kenosha police officer, spread across the globe attention has been focused back on Wisconsin, resulting in several days of unrest and continued demands for social justice.
State legislative sessions have been cut short, protesters have been gunned down and today the national spotlight will be on Wisconsin as President Trump, arguably one of the most polarizing forces in this ongoing fight for social justice, will be visiting one of America’s most recent sites of unrest, Kenosha, WI.
In the midst of all the videos, news stories, deaths, anger, tears and fears we continue to listen and work towards legislative solutions being demanded by residents, and our Black screens today are one small way for us to recognize that Black Lives Matter.
We stand in unison in support of the revolution to demand change in our country – the change for equality, justice, opportunity, equity and freedom for all Black people.
