Public School Workers, Parents, Community Leaders to protest Betsy DeVos appearance at publicly funded private voucher school
"Betsy DeVos is waging war on public education and is working to make drastic cuts to after school programs, arts education, literacy development, community schools, foreign language education, the Special Olympics, and has proposed a $143 billion cut from federal student loans."
MILWAUKEE – Tomorrow at 7:15 AM, MTEA President Amy Mizialko, MTEA Vice President Ingrid Walker-Henry and community leaders will speak at a protest of Betsy DeVos as she tours an unaccountable private voucher school as part of her and Donald Trump‘s agenda to privatize public schools.
MTEA President Amy Mizialko issued the following statement:
“Betsy DeVos is waging war on public education and is working to make drastic cuts to after school programs, arts education, literacy development, community schools, foreign language education, the Special Olympics, and has proposed a $143 billion cut from federal student loans.
“DeVos kicks off her divisive back-to-school tour at a voucher school in Milwaukee that teaches that women are inferior to men, homosexuality is a sin, and that the earth is 6,000 years old. This publicly-funded, unaccountable private voucher school is an emblem of the failed privatization experiment that hurts our children and has stolen important funding from public schools that serve ALL children. We have seen the damage private voucher and charter schools have inflicted upon the children and public schools of Milwaukee first hand. MPS educators will continue to stand united with parents, students and our community to resist Betsy DeVos and Donald Trump’s privatization plans and to win the fully funded public schools that Milwaukee students, families, and staff deserve!”
