Breakfast in a Firehouse

An international style breakfast spot opens in Walker’s Point, and a new café will offer tech training to local kids.

The owner of La Merenda, the tapas restaurant and bar in Walker’s Point, is scheduled to open a breakfast and brunch restaurant Tuesday September 9th. Engine Company No. 3, named for the converted turn of the century firehouse where owner Peter Sandroni will offer internationally inspired breakfast, is located at 217 W. National Ave.

Engine Company No. 3 will feature ingredients made in-house such as sausage and cured bacon in addition to sodas, syrups and infusions for cocktails. Hours are Tuesday – Friday 7-2pm and Saturday – Sunday 9-2pm.

UberDork Café will be opening later this month at N89 W16750 Appleton Ave. in Menomonee Falls. Owner and former special-ed art teacher Natali Heuss will use the space not just for coffee and tea, but also for art and science classes designed for children, parents and those with special needs

An area will be set aside for various forms of gaming, including the classic Atari and Playstation 2 consoles.

Heuss plans to give away three scholarships a year to assist underserved children who want to pursue careers in Science or Video Game Design/Development. She will offer discounts to students based on their grades, and tutoring from local volunteers.

UberDork Café will also provide service and support to small business owners. It will share a space with technological consulting business Future Lotus.

Quetzal is scheduled to open in the former location of Café La Paloma this November at 606 S. 5th St. The Mexican restaurant is currently developing its menu, with plans for tapas, mole and grass-fed beef sourced locally. Quetzal will feature live entertainment and a separate space for private parties.

India Garden is tentatively scheduled to open this November in Wauwatosa at 2930 N. 117th St, a location previously occupied for 38 years by The Open Hearth. Restaurateur Charnjit Bolla is former partner of the East Side Indian restaurant Maharaja. The menu will feature dishes from Southern and Northern India, along with a lunch buffet. It will be open seven days a week.

Closings:

Downtown restaurant Arin Bert Coffee and Grill closed August 30th due to lack of business. The restaurant, located at 222 W. Wells, opened in 2012 and served Armenian and Middle Eastern cuisine. Featuring Turkish coffee and homemade pastries like Napoleon Torte and Baklava, Arin Bert was a part of the Suspended Coffees movement.
