New Giannis Mural Completed
A 54-feet-high mural on E. Wisconsin has Giannis looking west toward Fiserv Forum.
Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo is set to take on the Boston Celtics Monday night at Fiserv Forum. But he’s already striking a larger-than-life pose on the streets of Milwaukee.
A three-story mural of Antetokounmpo was completed Sunday by artist Mauricio Ramirez on the east side of the office building at 600 E. Wisconsin Ave.
It is the fifth, and largest, mural in the city to include the basketball player.
“Playing basketball, you never expect things like that to happen. You just play basketball. You love the game. You enjoy the game. I feel like once you dedicate yourself to your team and to the city, people feel that,” said Antetokounmpo of the latest mural in a post-game press conference Saturday.
The new mural was jointly sponsored by the Bucks, Milwaukee Downtown Business Improvement District #21 and building owner Dan Nelson, Jr. The piece covers a space that most recently featured a mural from Fred Kaems and John Kowalczyk painted as part of the 2019 Sculpture Milwaukee exhibit.
“We are proud to continue to support public artworks in Milwaukee,” said Bucks chief marketing officer Dustin Godsey. “We want to thank Milwaukee Downtown BID #21 for approaching us with this exciting idea and Dan Nelson Jr. for providing a perfect location. We also want to thank Mauricio for his extraordinary ability to capture the essence of Giannis, and we look forward for this mural to be appreciated and enjoyed for years to come.”
Ramirez is now setting his sights on a six-story mural of Mexican American Selena. The new mural will be painted on the west side of the Taxco Apartments building later this summer. It will replace a mural of Selena that was painted on a building that was demolished to create the Taxco site on S. 5th St.
Ramirez’ work can now be found across the country, but his first major project was painting utility boxes on Wisconsin Ave. He’s painted numerous other murals in the city since 2017, including a spring 2020 piece honoring frontline healthcare workers and a fall 2020 piece on the Marquette University campus highlighting racial equity.
Milwaukee Downtown has sponsored the creation of a number of new public art projects in recent years, including a 5,000-square-foot mural, dubbed “Heart and Sol,” that Ramirez painted in Westown in 2019.
