WBB Opens BIG EAST Play at DePaul on Sunday

Golden Eagles begin 20th season in BIG EAST Conference

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s basketball team travels to DePaul to open BIG EAST play on Sunday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. CT.

Marquette is coming off an 87-42 win over Stonehill before Christmas break. The Golden Eagles shot a season-high 54.0 percent from the floor and had a season-high 27 assists on 34 made baskets.

Skylar Forbes had a career-high 25 points and 10 rebounds for her second career double-double. Halle Vice added 15 points and five rebounds. Marquette led by 52 points in the fourth quarter, the largest lead this season against an NCAA Division I opponent.

Following Sunday’s game, MU hosts No. 7/5 UConn on Wednesday, Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. CT.

MU OPENS 20TH BIG EAST CAMPAIGN
• Marquette, which joined the BIG EAST Conference in 2005-06, opens its 20th campaign in the league on Sunday when the squad travels to DePaul.
• The Golden Eagles are 210-151 (.581 winning percentage) in BIG EAST play and have had 12 winning seasons.
• Marquette won the 2018-19 regular season title finishing 15-3 in conference play.
• MU was crowned BIG EAST tournament champion in 2017 when the Golden Eagles beat DePaul 86-78 in the final.

CONSUEGRA FIRST BIG EAST GAME IN CHARGE AT MU
Cara Consuegra, in her first year as head coach at MU, will coach in her first BIG EAST Conference game as a head coach on Sunday.
• Consuegra, who was head coach at Charlotte for the past 13 seasons, guided the 49ers in three different conferences, playing in the Atlantic 10 from 2011-13, Conference USA from 2013-23, and the American Athletic Conference in 2023-24.
• Consuegra was 134-84 (.615 winning percentage) in conference games at Charlotte and won the 2021-22 Conference USA regular season with a 15-3 mark in league play before winning the conference tournament.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST DEPAUL
• DePaul is Marquette’s most commonly played opponent, meeting 86 times in a series that dates back to 1978.
• Marquette and DePaul have been in three different conferences together, including the Great Midwest Conference (1991-95), Conference USA (1995-2005), and BIG EAST (2005-pres.).
• DePaul leads the series 49-37.
• The Blue Demons lead the series since joining the BIG EAST, 23-19.
• Marquette has taken seven out of the last eight meetings.

LEE ON BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL FOR THIRD-STRAIGHT WEEK
• Senior guard Lee Volker earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday for the third-straight week.
• Volker averaged 13.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 1-1 week for MU.
• Volker recorded her first career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds at Bowling Green on Wednesday, Dec. 18. She followed that up with another double-digit scoring outing with 10 points and eight rebounds against Stonehill on Saturday, Dec. 21.
• The Purcellville, Virginia native shot 47.6 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from three.
• It marks fifth-straight week MU has had a player on the conference weekly honor roll.

SKYLAR CAREER DAY AGAINST STONEHILL
• Skylar Forbes had a career-high 25 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season against Stonehill on Saturday, Dec. 21.
• It was her second 20-point game of the season and ninth game scoring in double figures.
• The sophomore forward leads the team with 19 3-pointers made and is averaging a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game.

FLOOR GENERAL
• Olivia Porter has 24 assists over the last four games, including a career-high seven against Illinois State (Dec. 8) and Milwaukee (Dec. 15).
• The junior guard leads the team at 3.4 assists per game.

DEFENSE LEADS THE WAY FOR MU
• Marquette is first in the BIG EAST and 10th in the nation in field goal percentage defense (33.5 percent) and have held opponents to under 45 percent from the floor in all 11 games this season.
• MU is 19th nationally holding opponents to 54.1 points per game.
• The Golden Eagles have held opponents to under 53 points five times this season and have held teams to 10-point-or-less in 14 quarters this season.
