WBB Earns WBIT Bid, Plays Drake in Des Moines in First Round Thursday
Golden Eagles and Bulldogs first meeting since 2004
The Marquette University women’s basketball team (20-10, 12-6 BIG EAST) has earned a bid to the WBIT and will play Drake in the first round in Des Moines on Thursday, March 20.
The Golden Eagles and Bulldogs have met four times before, with the series tied 2-2. The last meeting came in 2004 when Marquette won 73-54 in Des Moines on Nov. 26, 2004.
2024-25 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
- Marquette reached 20 wins for the fifth-straight year and seventh time in the last eight seasons.
- The Golden Eagles finished fourth in the BIG EAST with a 12-6 conference record after being picked 10th in the preseason coaches’ poll.
- Marquette was 13-2 at home, the fifth time in the last six seasons MU won 13-or-more games at the Al McGuire Center.
- The Golden Eagles won the Battle on the Banks over Thanksgiving weekend, an MTE hosted by Rutgers, defeating the Scarlet Knights and Maryland Eastern Shore at Jersey Mikes Arena.
- Cara Consuegra earned BIG EAST Co-Coach of the Year honors.
- Skylar Forbes was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team as a sophomore.
- Senior Lee Volker earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors.
PROGRAM POSTSEASON HISTORY
- Marquette is making its first appearance in the WBIT.
- 26th postseason appearance all-time for the Golden Eagles including winning the 2008 WNIT.
ABOUT THE WBIT
In 2023, the NCAA announced the creation of an annual 32-team postseason invitation tournament for women’s basketball, which will be owned and funded by the NCAA. The Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT) is in its second year in 2025. The WBIT selection committee, comprised of five former Division I women’s basketball coaches and three current/former Division I athletic administrators are responsible for selecting the 32-team field.
