Milwaukee Gets Ready to Cut Ribbon on First Parklet in City

Public Invited to Grand Opening of ‘Curbside Dining Deck’ Aug. 23rd

By - Aug 19th, 2013 10:52 am

A ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening celebration to highlight Milwaukee’s first ‘parklet’, an innovative use of curbside space, will be held on Friday, August 23rd at noon in front of Divino Wine & Dine and Two Bucks, 2315-2321 N. Murray Ave.  The public is invited to join Alderman Nik Kovac, The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works, The East Side Business Improvement District and the business and property owners to celebrate this new use of curbside space.

A ‘parklet’ is a public space created at the curb in place of parking. San Francisco was the pioneer of this idea in 2010 and it’s catching on in other cities. The parklets take on different uses, some are curbside patio decks and others are more whimsical parks with benches. Milwaukee’s first parklet on Murray Avenue is a curbside dining deck on the street, replacing one loading zone and two metered parking spaces. The location is on a side street and far enough away from a major street intersection. A parklet encourages more public interaction, it becomes a destination and it helps support local businesses in denser neighborhoods like the East Side.
