Mahlon Mitchell Statement on the Release of Body Cam Footage Involving Sterling Brown
"As a first responder, I believe there are no excuses for the violent tactics used against Sterling Brown."
MADISON – Democratic gubernatorial candidate for Governor Mahlon Mitchell released the following statement regarding the body cam footage involving Milwaukee Bucks guard Sterling Brown:
“As a first responder, I believe there are no excuses for the violent tactics used against Sterling Brown. I work every day with the men and women in law enforcement to keep our communities safe, and I think most are people of good character. But, as first responders, we must be able to call out unacceptable behavior when we see it.
The event is not an isolated incident, but indicative of a desperate need for change. We must rethink criminal justice from the ground up; from everyday practices on the street, to our incarceration rate, bail process, and our recidivism rate.
In Sterling Brown we see a yet another member of our community fall victim to an unjust system, and we know that our son, our brother, our friend, or our neighbor might be next. The cycle must stop. Our lives and our communities demand that we come together with law enforcement and build a more just system for all.”
