Ismael Luna Wins Democratic Primary for Wisconsin’s 8th Assembly District
MILWAUKEE, WI – Ismael Luna, a 26-year-old community advocate and nonprofit professional, won the Democratic primary for Wisconsin’s 8th Assembly District on Tuesday night.
“Esta noche es de ustedes. Tonight belongs to District 8,” said Luna. “Six months ago, this campaign was just an idea between neighbors. Tonight, it’s a victory. For too long, the South Side has been told to wait,” Luna added. “Wait for better schools. Wait for safer streets. Wait for housing we can afford. No más. The waiting ends now. And I’m not going to Madison alone. I’m bringing this whole community with me. Así es la comunidad. We help each other. This community raised me. It carried me through the hardest moments of my life. And tonight, it sent me to Madison to fight for us. I don’t forget where I come from, and I never will.”
Luna thanked Representative Ortiz-Velez for her years of service to the district. His campaign earned the support of a broad coalition including the Wisconsin AFL-CIO, SEIU Wisconsin, LiUNA, UFCW Local 1473, AFSCME PEOPLE Wisconsin, Voces de la Frontera Action, La Comunidad MKE, Citizen Action of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Progress, Wisconsin Working Families Party, Wisconsin Conservation Voters, Fair Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance, the Wisconsin Social Workers PAC, the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, Run for Something, New Politics, Leaders We Deserve, and the Shepherd Express, along with a recommendation from the Wisconsin Education Association Council. He was also endorsed by County Executive David Crowley, Assembly Assistant Minority Leader Kalan Haywood, State Representatives Priscilla Prado, Francesca Hong, Christine Sinicki, Angelina Cruz, Darrin Madison, Angelito Tenorio, Vincent Miresse, Ryan Spaude, and Ryan Clancy, Milwaukee Alderpersons JoCasta Zamarripa and Peter Burgelis, County Supervisors Jack Eckblad and Justin Bielinski, and Milwaukee public safety leader Aaron Lipski.
