Common Council adopts resolution expanding the Bronzeville Cultural and Entertainment District

Earlier this week, (Tuesday, January 21), the Common Council approved a resolution related to the expansion of the Bronzeville Cultural and Entertainment District in the 6th Aldermanic District.

Authored by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, the resolution (Council file #241216) expands the Bronzeville Cultural and Entertainment District from West Walnut Street to West Burleigh Street and from North Dr. Martin Luther King Drive to North 7th Street.

The purpose of this resolution is to help redefine the area as it relates to branding, marketing, and identification, as the redevelopment, promotional, and marketing activities have extended beyond the original boundaries identified in the City’s legislation.

The new boundaries will include areas commonly believed to be included in the district and neighborhoods in the historic Bronzeville area. These include the neighborhoods of Harambee, Halyard Park and Brewers Hill, which will continue to be positively impacted by the district’s ongoing development.

Alderwoman Coggs, founder of Bronzeville Week, said, “What we found through our work and development and marketing and promoting of the area is that the current legislative boundaries do not fit with how we have been operating or how the public sees Bronzeville.”

“Bronzeville is a distinct cultural and entertainment district, so it is important that we update the district’s boundaries to ensure that the continued redevelopment can happen organically within those boundaries,” she said.

The resolution was co-sponsored by Alderman José G. Pérez, Alderman Robert Bauman, Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa, and Alderman DiAndre Jackson.
