City of Milwaukee Arts Board awards $217,000 to 33 arts organizations
Grantees will be honored June 14 at a 4:30 p.m. reception in the atrium of the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts followed by an awards program and celebration at 5 p.m.
An effort to enable more individuals with disabilities to tell their stories on Ex Fabula stages, a series of cultural interactions with a classical music ensemble from Cuba, and an original theatrical production celebrating Milwaukee’s African-American Bronzeville community during the 1950s are among 33 projects awarded funding recently by the City of Milwaukee Arts Board.
At its May 10 meeting the MAB approved the recommendations of an eight-member citizen review panel to award $217,000 in grants ranging from $3,500 to $7,000. MAB grants require a dollar-for-dollar cash match from other sources, and the combined budgets of the 33 selected projects this year is more than $2.9 million. There were a total of 47 requests from nonprofit arts organizations to fund art, music, dance, arts education and other projects.
“I’m proud that Milwaukee is home to so many talented arts professionals,” said Ald. Michael Murphy, Milwaukee Arts Board Chair. “We are pleased to help support their efforts to bring the transformational power of the arts to our community.”
This year marks the 26th annual grant awards. Since 1991, the Milwaukee Arts Board has awarded more than $4.7 million to 126 different organizations.
Grantees will be honored June 14 at a 4:30 p.m. reception in the atrium of the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts followed by an awards program and celebration at 5 p.m.
The Milwaukee Arts Board grant program is funded by the City of Milwaukee with additional support from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. The MAB also awards matching funds for new works of public art and conservation of public art. More information is at city.milwaukee.gov/MAB.
