Charles Allis Art Museum Celebrates Dressing the Abbey Success!
Most Well Attended Exhibition in Museum’s 70+ Year History
Milwaukee, WI – May 19, 2022 – With over the 6,000 tickets sold, and just two weeks remaining for the exhibition, the Charles Allis Art Museum is announcing Dressing the Abbey as the most widely-attended exhibition in the museum’s seventy-plus year history.
The exhibition opened on February 4 and has since drawn supporters of the hit PBS drama series Downton Abbey as well as long-time admirers of the striking English Tudor architecture and remarkable craftsmanship of the once home to local industrialist (Allis-Chalmers) Charles and Sarah Allis.
The Dressing the Abbey exhibition ends on Memorial Day, May 30. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the door, at charlesallis.org or by calling 414-278-8295.
In addition, the Charles Allis and Villa Terrace Art Museums (CAVT) opened A Walk in the Park with Olmsted – A Vision for Milwaukee on April 14 through September 25 at the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum, 2220 N. Terrace Avenue. The exhibition presented by the Friends of Villa Terrace profiles the life and legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted (1822–1903) and the first concerted look at the Father of Landscape Architecture’s contributions to Milwaukee. The history and evolution of the three public parks designed by Olmsted and his firm—Lake Park, Riverside Park and Washington Park—are showcased. Additional information on this exhibit is available at olmstedmilwaukee.org.
“As we all emerge from the hibernation induced by the COVID pandemic, CAVT wanted to present a robust schedule of exhibitions this year to celebrate the resilience of Milwaukee’s vibrant arts and culture community,” said Harvey Willms. Additional 2022 Scheduled Exhibitions at the museums are as follows:
Ghosts of Segregation
July 28 – December 4, 2022 at the Charles Allis Art Museum
In the nationally-received Ghosts of Segregation, photographer Richard Frishman explores the lingering presence of segregation and institutional racism hidden in everyday American architecture. Frishman’s photographs show how our surroundings bear witness to history, reminding us where we have been, where we are now, and crucially asking, “where do we go from here?” This exhibition is being presented to encourage local conversations about the history and impact of segregation on Milwaukee and will include a lecture series.
Grounded
October 27, 2022 – March 5, 2023 at the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum
This exhibition introduces the practices of three emerging local artists who engage the sculpture discipline with materials derived from the Earth at a molecular level. Plaster, clay, glass, and more will be represented through formal and experimental installations throughout the Museum.
Café Sopra Mare
June 5 – September 25, 2022 at the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum
In addition to exhibitions, CAVT will be presenting Café Sopra Mare, its signature outdoor concert series, in the courtyard at Villa Terrace on Sundays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. beginning June 5 and ending September 25. With the generous support of Shorewest, REALTORS® Northshore Office, this series is free to the public. A schedule of performers is available at villaterrace.org.
