Announcing the 2019 Danceworks DanceLAB Summer Series
The concert series will include Ignite: A Hip Hop Dance Experience, DanceLAB Teen & Danceworks On Tap, as well as the second-ever Movement Media Lab and the latest installment of Get It Out There.
MILWAUKEE, WI (July 9, 2019) — Danceworks DanceLAB will present its 2019 DanceLAB series between July and October of 2019 at the Danceworks Studio Theatre, 1661 N. Water Street in Milwaukee. The concert series will include Ignite: A Hip Hop Dance Experience, DanceLAB Teen: Conversations and Danceworks On Tap: Tap Talk, as well as the second-ever Movement Media Lab and the latest installment of Get It Out There. Each performance highlights emerging and established artists in Milwaukee through different genres of movement including hip hop dance, contemporary dance, and tap dance, among other collaborations and movement fusions.
“For the last 6 years,” says Danceworks’ Senior Director of Programs Kim Johnson-Rockafellow, “Danceworks DanceLAB concert Ignite: A Hip Hop Dance Experience has lit up the stage and excited audiences, becoming a crowd favorite.” To celebrate some of the choreographers and crews who have contributed to Ignite’s lasting success, this year’s installation will feature eight mainstays and one brand new crew, including Richard “Budda” Brasfield, Chancie Cole, Caleb Goebel, AJ Johnson, Jasper Sanchez/S.A.I.N.T.S, Clayvon Savage, Gabi Sustache, Joshua Yang/Origins, and Paul Webb/Danceworks Performance Workshop. The experience of the choreographers will continue to honor the DanceLAB mission of embracing established AND emerging artists with the concert leaving the audience, as always, energized.
DanceLAB Teen: Conversations features original work from Danceworks Youth Performance Company Artistic Manager and Danceworks Performance Company member, Gina Laurenzi. Laurenzi will set new choreography, improvisational structures, and infuse movement created by dancers throughout to create a unique collaboration with teen artists. Concepts will be drawn from both the dancers’ own personal experiences and the moods the music evokes, and will feature the music of Chicago band, Twin Talk.
Danceworks On Tap: Tap Talk will send and receive messages through rhythmic communication in a dynamic exchange. Unfolding sequences and layers of audible texture create what is most unique about tap dancing – movement your eyes can hear! Danceworks’ Senior Director of Education and Artistic Director of Danceworks On Tap, Amy Brinkman-Sustache, invites audiences to “come join the conversation!”
