MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers announced today his appointment of Chad La Lor to serve as Douglas County District Attorney. The appointment fills a vacancy created by District Attorney Mark Fruehauf’s resignation. La Lor will serve for the remainder of the unexpired term that ends January 2029.

“Chad La Lor’s 30 years of experience as a prosecutor, law enforcement officer, and public defender, as well as his commitment to service, will make him a great district attorney for the people of Douglas County,” said Gov. Evers.

Since 2019, La Lor has served as an assistant district attorney in the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, where he prosecutes a broad range of cases, serves on the treatment court team, and provides training to law enforcement officers. From 2018 to 2019, he was an assistant state public defender, representing indigent clients at the trial level in Northwestern Wisconsin. Prior to his legal career, he was a member of the Superior Police Department from 1994 to 2012, serving as an officer, narcotics investigator, sergeant, and captain. From 2013 to 2016, he was a deputy in the Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office and served as a treatment, alternatives, and diversion court case manager for the county’s criminal justice system.

“I applaud the governor for this decision,” said former Douglas County District Attorney Fruehauf. “Since he joined the office as an assistant district attorney seven years ago, I’ve seen firsthand the intelligence, compassion, and hard work ethic Chad La Lor brings to this position. This community is safer because of Chad’s efforts, and he will shine as the next District Attorney for Douglas County.”

La Lor grew up in Northwestern Wisconsin and lives in the town of Amnicon. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Superior, St. Cloud State University, and the Mitchell Hamline School of Law. In addition to his years of experience in the criminal justice system, La Lor enlisted in the United States Army Reserve while in high school and served in the Wisconsin Army National Guard from 1990 to 2008. He was mobilized to active duty and served in Iraq from March 2003 to April 2004.

“I am honored to accept Gov. Evers’ appointment as the next Douglas County District Attorney and appreciate the confidence and trust he has shown in appointing me,” said La Lor. “For over 30 years, I have served the people of Wisconsin, primarily in Douglas County. I have had the privilege to collaborate with outstanding partners in the criminal justice system in my prior roles as a law enforcement officer, treatment court case manager, public defender, and as an assistant district attorney. Each of these prior roles has given me a unique perspective on the criminal justice system. I know that I have big shoes to fill in following former District Attorney Mark Fruehauf’s leadership. Being the district attorney will surely bring many challenges, but I am confident in the work and the abilities of my fellow prosecutors and our staff in this office that will continue in our mission of seeking justice.”
