By - Jan 18th, 2026 12:05 pm

The Marquette University men’s basketball team (6-13, 1-7 BIG EAST) returns to Fiserv Forum to host Providence (9-9, 2-5 BIG EAST) on Monday, Jan. 19 at 5 p.m. CT in a special Martin Luther King Jr. Day matchup. FS1 features the national television broadcast, with Jeff Levering (play-by-play) and LaPhonso (analyst) calling the action. Following Monday’s outing, the Golden Eagles will return to road action at Butler on Friday, Jan. 23.

All-Time Series Provides Plenty Of Highlights

The all-time series between Marquette and Providence consists of 41 games (Marquette leads 26-15) and includes a number of memorable contests for MU fans.

The two programs first met in the 1963 National Invitation Tournament and the result was a 70-64 victory by PC. The teams would cross paths in 1966-67 in the same event and a slim 81-80 Marquette overtime win helped the squad to a runner-up finish under head coach Al McGuire.

Since the teams began meeting in BIG EAST Conference action, series highlights include a game delayed at the Bradley Center when a bat continued to interrupt play on the court, a wet court at PC in 2016-17 that caused numerous stoppages in play, a league record-tying 52-point performance by Markus Howard in 2017-18 at Providence and multiple overtime results.

BIG EAST Honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

As part of the conference-wide efforts to support social impact and inclusion, BIG EAST men’s and women’s basketball programs are using their platform to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Teams will be wearing shooting shirts donning a message representing the life lived by Dr. King.

The campaign tipped off on Jan. 14 and will continue throughout the weekend with a total of 13 combined games on the men’s and women’s side. On the men’s side, an FS1 doubleheader took place on Friday, Jan. 16 with Creighton at Providence and Marquette at DePaul. On Saturday, Seton Hall hosted Butler, while UConn traveled to take on Georgetown. Rounding out the day, Villanova hosted St. John’s. The weekend concludes with Providence playing at MU on MLK Jr. Day.
