Governor Evers announces funding to improve Wisconsin Avenue bridge in Wauwatosa
Mayor says improvements will help deal with flooding, improve public safety and make Wauwatosa an even more pedestrian-friendly city
Governor Tony Evers together with Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Craig Thompson today announced funding for a bridge improvement project in Wauwatosa. The project will replace the West Wisconsin Avenue bridge over Honey Creek, making the roadway safer and more resilient.
“This project is much needed,” Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis McBride said. “It will help us to deal with flooding, improve public safety and make Wauwatosa an even more pedestrian-friendly city. It will set precedents for sustainability and ‘walkability’ throughout Wauwatosa and other communities. I thank Governor Evers and Secretary Thompson for their commitment to local projects.”
“Emergency response should not be slowed due to high water,” WisDOT Secretary Craig Thompson said. “We are pleased to cooperate with Wauwatosa leaders to fix this longstanding problem.”
WisDOT awarded $2.85 million in state funds for the $4.58 million project through the Local Bridge Program. The new bridge will have longer approach lengths. It will stand 3.5 feet higher to improve structure resiliency. Construction is currently anticipated to begin as early as 2023.
