Danceworks’ Art to Art, Alchemist’s Time Travelers

Transit Authority, an eight-piece tribute to the music of classic rockers Chicago will be performing as part of the Marcus Center for the Arts’ “Live @ the Peck Pavillion” concert series on Tuesday,  Aug. 14. From 25 or 6 to 4 to Feelin’ Stronger Every Day, the group covers a wide cross section of Chicago’s vast repertoire of music. As always, catering courtesy of Sazama’s Fine Catering. Theater

The Alchemist Theatre is up to more mischief this week, as superheroine Natalie Ryan travels through time and space foil the Rogue Traveler and save the day. Vince Figueroa and Beth Lewinski wrote this sci-fi adventure, and Anna Wolfe returns in the title role (that’s right, this Natalie story is a sequel). Natalie Ryan and the Rogue Traveler opens at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, and runs 10 times through Aug. 26. Tickets are $15 online and $18 at the door. The Alchemist is at  2569 S. Dance

Each August, Danceworks matches choreographers with artists from other disciplines and shows the results in an Art to Art program. This year’s edition is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 17 and 18, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug., in the Danceworks Studio Theatre, 1661 N. Water St.

This year’s creative teams: Choreographer/dancer Andrea Hill Johnson, theatre director Phylis Ravel, Playwright Orada Lelanuja; choreographer/dancer Catey Ott Thompson,  sculptor/set designer C. Kai Marquardt; choreographer/dancer Mauriah Donegan Kraker, photographer, film and fibers artist Brittany Parker; choreographer Jose A. Luis, documentary film artist Kellie Bronikowski; choreographer Molly Mingey,composer Jas McHugh; choreographer/dancer Kelly Radermacher, visual artist/performer Leah Schreiber; and and videographer Bill Skaleski, with the artists of Art to Art.

Visual Art

The sixth annual Chalk Art Festival, presented by Bayshore Town Center, the City of Glendale and the Riverwest Artists Association, will be held Saturday, August 18 from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Sunday, August 19 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m at Bayshore Town Center. Attendees of this free festival will be able to watch more than 65 local and national artists create works of sidewalk chalk art.

On Saturday, August 18, attendees will be able to watch artists in progress and vote until 6 p.m. on their favorite pieces in three categories: People’s Choice, Most Likely to be Hung in a Museum and Best Use of Color. Additional activities in the Town Square will include: Noon – Mainstreet Song & Dance Troupe; 3 – 5 p.m. – Milwaukee Jazz All Stars; 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. – Caribbean Eclipse at the Rotunda Entrance. On Sunday, August 19, attendees will be able to see the finished pieces and results of the public vote.

Art, music, food and architectural and botanical wonders are all part of the Milwaukee Domes Art Festival. Not just any artist could get in; this year’s jurors were Milwaukee artist Shelby Keefe; Terrence Hoffman, an artist and former president of MIAD; and Claire Odishoo, the Gallery Director at Cardinal Stritch University’s Northwestern Mutual Art Gallery. They selected approximately 50 artists through a blind jury process. The festival runs Friday (noon-8 p.m.), Saturday (10 a.m.-8 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m.-4 p.m.), Aug. 17-19, at the Domes. Admission is $8, which includes entry to the always interesting botanical displays. Kids 5 and under get in free to this family-friendly event.
