Rep. Mark Spreitzer’s statement on redistricting ruling

"Today’s order is a victory for all Wisconsin residents."

By - Jan 27th, 2017 01:28 pm

MADISON- Today, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin ordered the state legislature to draw new, constitutional legislative districts by November 1, 2017.  In response, State Representative Mark Spreitzer (D-Beloit) released the following statement:

“Today’s order is a victory for all Wisconsin residents. We are one step closer to having constitutional legislative districts in our state where voters will get to choose their representatives, rather than representatives choosing their voters.”

“However, I have serious concerns over Wisconsin Republicans being allowed to draw the new districts. If Republicans rigged our state’s districts once before for their sole partisan advantage, why should we trust they will be fair this time? I believe the process to draw new maps should be an open, transparent, and bipartisan effort.
