Big Things for Small Wind Education at the MREA
Registration is now open for Wind Week at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association.

Custer, WI – Registration is now open for Wind Week at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA). The MREA is one of the only educational institutes to offer a Small Wind Site Assessment Certificate. Since 1990, the MREA has been providing accredited renewable energy education to thousands of people, including certificate programs for solar electric (PV), and solar thermal heating systems. A combination of online and in-person courses are offered throughout the year. This September, the MREA is inviting folks interested in small wind energy systems to attend Wind Week at the MREA.
The following series of courses will be offered at the MREA headquarters in Custer, WI, September 6-9, 2016:
Introduction to Wind Systems (approved for 8 Wisconsin electrical CECs)
Introduction to Tower climbing and Safety
Wind System Repair and Maintenance (both intro courses are prerequisites)
MREA Training Coordinator and instructor Jenny Heinzen, says, “If you’re even remotely interested in a wind turbine, either for your home or for your cabin in the woods, Intro to Wind is a ‘must-take’ course. And for those who are serious about installing and/or climbing a tower for inspection or repairs, stick around for Intro to Climbing and Repair and Maintenance. It’s exhilarating and fun!”
Why wind when solar is all the rage? Wind energy is a vital part of creating a sustainable distributed energy system, and pairs nicely with PV and hybrid systems. (Most off-grid homes have a combination of both wind and solar energy.) Although more expensive than solar, if you have a good wind resource, a turbine can work for you.
A solid wind resource. More than one-third of U.S. wind capacity is located in the Midwest. Five Midwest states generate more than 10% of their electricity from wind energy, and Iowa gets more than 30% of its energy from the wind.
