Veterans Day signing ceremony set for tiny homes initiative
News Release from Alderwoman Chantia Lewis
Alderwoman Chantia Lewis will join Mayor Tom Barrett for a special signing ceremony on Veterans Day – Monday, November 11 – to mark the initial development of a special tiny homes housing initiative for homeless veterans.
The signing ceremony will be held on Market St. outside City Hall at 9:45 a.m. on Monday. A mobile tiny home will be open for tours Monday outside City Hall on Market St. from 7 a.m. – 10 a.m.
The tiny homes initiative – created by legislation sponsored by Alderwoman Lewis and approved by the Common Council on November 5 – will bring nearly 50 Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin homes and a community center to a city-owned parcel located just west of N. 60th St. and south of W. Green Tree Rd. (6767 N. 60th St.).
The site, located in the #New9thMKE, could eventually include 48 tiny homes, each with about 240 square feet of living space.
Alderwoman Lewis, herself a U.S. military veteran, said the homes will provide housing for homeless veterans and veterans in danger of becoming homeless for up to two years as they ready for a transition to permanent housing.
“This first-of-its-kind project in Milwaukee will include supportive services that address the trauma some veterans face and the desire for dignity shared by all veterans,” she said. “I am proud to welcome my veteran brothers and sisters to a place where they can be safe and where they can connect with peers and the support they need,” she said.
Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin is raising funds to help construct the tiny homes.
