City Hall display offers continued opportunity to learn about Juneteenth

After yesterday’s Juneteenth Day celebration in Milwaukee, the city’s 51st year of such celebrations, Alderwoman Chantia Lewis wants to remind residents that there is still a chance to learn about the Juneteenth and other related history by visiting City Hall.

The City Hall rotunda is hosting an educational Juneteenth display courtesy of the Wisconsin Black Historical Society/Museum. The display includes information on the background of Juneteenth Day, Wisconsin’s African American Civil War veterans, and additional history about anti-slavery efforts in Wisconsin. The display will remain at City Hall through Wednesday, June 22.

“Yesterday’s Juneteenth Day celebration in Milwaukee was a big success, and there are still opportunities available to continue learning and growing,” Alderwoman Lewis said. “The historical display at City Hall is a chance for residents to continue their journey of learning our history and why days like Juneteenth carry so much importance. I’d encourage everyone to stop by and visit the display while they still have the chance.”

Also on display at City Hall through Wednesday, June 22 are multiple quilt banners by local master quilter Ethel White. Much of the award-winning art in White’s collection of more than 200 quilts depicts African and African-American history and culture.
