Mary grew up in Janesville, Wisconsin and recalls becoming involved in art early in life. Her first ‘official’ art training began at MATC, where she earned her associate degree in Commercial Art.  She pursued a fine arts degree at MIAD and some years later, transferred to Alverno College and earned degrees in Art Education and Art Therapy. Watercolor has been her favorite medium and she credits Wisconsin watercolor artist, Jean Crane, for helping her develop her skills in this medium. It was during this time of working with Crane that she discovered Zentangle, the art of drawing structured, non-representational patterns in an unplanned manner so as to allow the artist to focus on each stroke, not the result.  According to Mary, it brought back a freshness and newness to her art interests, “I’ve always loved pens and making lines, so Zentangle was a good fit for me.” Several years ago she became a certified Zentangle instructor. She continues to teach and offers various classes that incorporate different media with Zentangle.   Forever learning, Mary enjoys continuing to experiment with other mediums. “This is such an exciting time to be an artist with all the available new mediums out there”, smiles Mary.

Come in to meet Mary in person, learn about her life as an artist, and watch her paint on Wednesdays & Saturdays, January 11, 15, 18, 22, 25, 29: 11 am-4 pm in the gallery space at the Cedarburg Cultural Center. Mary will also be teaching a day long mixed media workshop called Zentangled Birches on Friday, January 31:  10 am-4 pm. The workshop is intended to create an opportunity for individuals or family members (age 12 and up) to come together for a day of artistry that everyone will feel good about. Zentangle art will be taught and incorporated with different mediums and applications. Trees are one of this instructor’s favorite subjects to draw and paint. The white of the birch provides a good background for drawing the various tangles.  According to Boettcher, the creative possibilities are vast during each layer, especially the final phase when pen and ink tangles are incorporated. Students are asked to bring a 6″ x 6″ canvas and a bag lunch to class.  All other supplies are included in the fee of $86 for CCC Members and $104 for Non-Members.
