This year, Artists Working in Education, Inc., is celebrating 20 years in community providing greater access to the arts, inspiring youth creativity and re-imaging public space, all ways that contribute to a more vibrant Milwaukee.  AWE is excited to continue this work under the leadership of Jezamil Arroyo-Vega, who has been named Interim Executive Director.

Arroyo-Vega brings an array of organizational administration, planning, design and fund development experience to her role at AWE. Recently Arroyo-Vega was living and working in Puerto Rico bringing best-practices of neighborhood stabilization efforts to an international audience. She worked as a capacity-builder with Puerto Rico’s Housing Financing Authority, and returned to Milwaukee after Hurricane Maria ravaged much of the island.

Jezamil received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Architecture from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and she also served as a member of Public Allies – Milwaukee, AmeriCorps in 2008 – 2009. Throughout her career, Jezamil has collaborated on projects in Milwaukee’s most vibrant neighborhoods, such as Silver City, Burnham Park, Layton Park, Harambee, Bronzeville and Avenues West.

“I believe that creativity and art are valuable gateways of expression in the transformation of individuals and communities. They allow us to heal, dream, believe and be inspired as we grow. I feel honored to continue nurturing Milwaukee youth’s imaginations through AWE’s meaningful art programming throughout the city,” Jezamil Arroyo-Vega said.

Previously, AWE was led for six years by Beth Haskovec who recently joined LISC Milwaukee to lead its commercial revitalization initiatives. The organization is committed to their mission and a search for a permanent executive director will begin immediately.
