Ismael Luna Elected to Represent Wisconsin’s 8th Assembly District
MILWAUKEE, WI – Ismael Luna, a 26-year-old community advocate and nonprofit professional, was elected Tuesday to represent Wisconsin’s 8th Assembly District, winning over 84% of the vote.
“Este es mi hogar,” said Luna. “My parents taught me that if you are able to make it, you turn around and help the next person. Tonight, District 8 gave me the chance to do that for all of us. I’m going to Madison for the young people who deserve a future here, for our elders who deserve to age with dignity, and for every family that wants a voice that shows up and does the work. ¡Juntos, we will build a stronger South Side!”
Luna grew up on Milwaukee’s South Side, experienced homelessness at 14, and became a first-generation college graduate with a master’s degree in public policy. His campaign was defined by direct community organizing, including regular neighborhood clean-ups and a mutual aid food network launched in response to increased ICE activity in the district. He won the August Democratic primary with 70% of the vote, and turnout was up 77% from the last competitive primary.
“I’m grateful to every organization and leader who believed in this campaign,” Luna added. Luna was supported by the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, Voces de la Frontera Action, the Wisconsin AFL-CIO, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin, New Politics, Leaders We Deserve, Wisconsin Progress, Citizen Action of Wisconsin, SEIU Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Laborers’ District Council (LiUNA), the Northern Midwest Regional Council of Carpenters, the Wisconsin Social Workers Political Action Committee, AFT Local 212 COPE, UFCW Local 1473, ATU Local 998, AFSCME PEOPLE Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, Wisconsin Conservation Voters, the Wisconsin Working Families Party, Fair Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance, the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, Run for Something, the Shepherd Express, and the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, with recommendations from the Wisconsin Education Association Council, Mental Health Now, and Moms Demand Action. He was also endorsed by U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, Congresswoman Gwen Moore, County Executive David Crowley, former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Assembly Assistant Minority Leader Kalan Haywood, State Representatives Priscilla Prado, Christine Sinicki, Margaret Arney, Supreme Moore Omokunde, Angelina Cruz, Darrin Madison, Angelito Tenorio, Vincent Miresse, Francesca Hong, Ryan Spaude, and Ryan Clancy, Milwaukee Alderpersons JoCasta Zamarripa and Peter Burgelis, County Supervisors Caroline Gómez-Tom, Juan Miguel Martinez, Jack Eckblad, and Justin Bielinski, and Milwaukee public safety leader Aaron Lipski.
Luna will take office in January and will focus on lowering the cost of housing and healthcare, fully funding our schools, protecting immigrant families, and making sure Milwaukee receives its fair share of state resources.
