‘Adventure Time” Background
Adventure Time is an American fantasy animated television series that premiered on Cartoon Network on April 5, 2010 and ran for eight years, ending on September 3, 2018. Created by Pendleton Ward and co-produced by Frederator Studios, with eleven minute episodes the show won eight Primetime Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, three Annie Awards, two British Academy Children’s Awards, a Motion Picture Sound Editors Award, and a Kerrang! Award. It was also nominated for a Sundance Film Festival Award, amongst many other prestigious Award nominations.
Finn and Jake interact with major characters throughout the series, including :
Princess Bubblegum (Hynden Walch), the sovereign of the Candy Kingdom which is a conscious piece of gum; the Ice King (Tom Kenny) a misunderstood yet menacing ice wizard; Marceline the Vampire Queen (Olivia Olson) a thousand year old vampire and rock music enthusiast; Lumpy Space Princess (Pedleton Ward) a melodramatic, immature princess made out of “lumps”; BMO (Niki Yang), a sentient video game console-shaped robot that lives with Finn and Jake; and Flame Princess (Jessica DiCicco), a flame supernatural being and ruler of the Fire Kingdom.
The story has an overarching plot and backstory, involving the nature of the Mushroom War, while each episode takes random, sensitive, bizarre twists throughout, sometimes dark, oftentimes whimsical and fantastical things, that lend themselves to the true creativity and unbounded medium of cartoons.
The inclusion of the series’ LGBTQ+ representation was the result of Rebecca Sugar, a storyboard artist who developed the relationship between Marcelene and Bubblegum, which featured the two princesses kissing in the final episode, ”.
Adventure Time’s willingness to explore dark, sad, and complex issues are the reasons it’s been included on a number of best-of lists, anh has been called “one of the most distinctive cartoons currently on the air”, by the A>V> Club in 2016.
