Later this morning, Mayor Cavalier Johnson will present his proposed 2026 City of Milwaukee budget to the Common Council, officially kicking off budget season at City Hall.
Our city is at a critical crossroads, and as we begin the weeks-long process to review, discuss, and amend the proposed budget, we want to reiterate our unwavering, united commitment to the areas we know are of great importance to our residents: public safety, affordable housing, infrastructure improvement, and neighborhood development. Residents’ needs must be met in these areas, and we want to hear directly from the people on how that should be done.
This year we have increased engagement opportunities to gather as much public feedback as we possibly can. The Joint Public Hearing on the Mayor’s proposed 2026 budget will take place at City Hall at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 6. We will also be hosting a public listening session at the new MLK Library on Saturday, October 18 from 9:30 – 11 a.m. And for those unable to attend one of these meetings, an online survey is available to provide your thoughts and feedback. This is accessible at https://tinyurl.com/BudgetSurvey2026.
Using public feedback as our guidepost, we will implement metrics-based budget solutions in order to invest in each of the core areas identified. We must meet our residents where their needs are greatest.
We look forward to reviewing the Mayor’s budget proposal in greater detail, and working collaboratively to refine it in the best interest of our constituents. We invite residents to engage in the process through public hearings and feedback sessions, as your voices are vital to shaping our city’s future.
