Coalition Reaches Handshake Agreement with the City for March Route
Milwaukee, WI – Hello everyone, for once, we are not here today to condemn a decision made by the City. We are very proud to announce that as of 11AM today, we have reached a handshake agreement with the City of Milwaukee that will allow us to march within sight and sound of the Fiserv Forum. A member of the City Attorney’s office will be observing the march at the very front, to make sure things go without a hitch.
We want to be clear about something today. We were able to come to this agreement with the City because we fought for it. They weren’t just going to hand it to us. One of our primary reasons for organizing this coalition is because we want to send the message that direct action works. That when we fight, we win. I want to repeat that one more time, when we fight, we win. We gave the City no choice but to have to engage with us and allow for a family friendly protest to go without being impeded.
We did this through the strong unity we have formed amongst endorsing organizations. We did this by running a call in with demands for the Mayor’s office. We did this by constantly applying pressure through the media to show that the city was refusing to work with us. We did this through our lawsuit against the city. We are proud that today, the City is working with us, and we will be able to run our march the way that we want to. I want to take this moment to thank all of our partners and all of the organizers who made this possible. We are so overjoyed to be able to show that we can fight for our rights, and we can win.
