CEDARBURG, WI (May 29, 2018): The Cedarburg Cultural Center is thrilled to host Catherine Laing, local jeweler, as June’s Artist-in Residence. You will recognize her around town as ‘the jeweler from Pagoda’.  She belongs here and…well, hasn’t she always lived here? Well, no. Catherine graduated from Cornell College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Arts and Education. She then set out for Garrison, Iowa. It was 1975 and she had opened and was operating her own jewelry studio for two years, when she answered an ad in the paper about a jewelry shop that needed jewelers. She applied, sending images of her work. And soon afterward she was off to New York to work for David Yurman. She chuckles and admits, “He wasn’t famous until years later but I can still claim that I worked for him!”

Catherine returned to Cedarburg in 1980 and has been designing jewelry here for almost 38 years! Her work has been represented by Edgewood Orchard Galleries since 1983. She also shows her work at GOWA in West Bend and The Pagoda in Cedarburg.

Stop in during the month of June to watch Catherine design her works of art and to learn how she helps others freshen their keepsakes. You’ll learn more about her fascinating journey as a jewelry designer and involvement in Cedarburg’s, The Pagoda. She will be at the CCC on Wednesdays, June 6, 13, 20, 27: 11am – 4 pm; Thursday, June 28: 11 am – 4 pm, as well as Tues, June 26 when she presents on collaborative design.
