MILWAUKEE – Alexander Kostal, a lifelong East Side resident, proud graduate of Milwaukee Public Schools, and career Public Defender has announced his candidacy for the Common Council District 3 special election.

Raised near Brady Street by a single father and small business owner, Kostal graduated from Riverside University High School before attending the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and receiving his Juris Doctor from Marquette University Law School in 2017.

Kostal’s lifelong commitment and passion for community improvement is demonstrated by his record of service throughout the district. Kostal served as President of the Brady Street Area Association and on its Board of Directors for five years. He was appointed to Milwaukee County’s Human Rights Commission by County Executive David Crowley in 2020. He is also a past board member and active participant in his local neighborhood association in Cambridge Woods, where he resides with his wife and their two dogs Aggie and Hillie.

Kostal has spent over seven years serving as an Assistant State Public Defender, a career which demands a principled sense of justice and a deep empathy for those who come into contact with our criminal justice system. In this career, Kostal has been recognized by the Wisconsin Law Journal and the Wisconsin Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers for outstanding trial advocacy and litigation victories.

Kostal has spent his lifetime dedicated to learning the intricacies of local government. Prior to his career as a Public Defender, Kostal spent time at the Common Council, the County Executive’s Office, the County’s Economic Development Division, and the County’s Corporation Counsel. Kostal’s candidacy is centered on improving public safety, supporting the sustainable development of affordable housing, protecting the district from predatory landlords and out of state corporate real estate developers, supporting public education, and delivering proactive and responsive constituent services.

“I’m committed to ensuring that our district is a safe and healthy place to raise a family, enjoy our wonderful dining, arts, and entertainment scene, to live and work, and truly thrive,” Kostal says. “The Third District is my home, and I will fight tirelessly to protect our neighbors and this community, and center its voice at City Hall.”
