WisDems Leaders Statement on SCOTUS Gutting VRA

"Every election was already an emergency—SCOTUS just made them five-alarm fires. Wisconsin must elect a Democratic Governor and Attorney General alongside majorities in the State Senate and Assembly to safeguard our democracy, or we will hand the GOP the pen to gerrymander as they have before and draw themselves an 8-0 congressional delegation."

MADISON, Wis. — Today Legislative Democratic leaders Greta Neubauer and Dianne Hesselbein, Legislative Black Caucus Chair Dora Drake, and Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Devin Remiker released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court gutting the Voting Rights Act of 1965:

“Today, Donald Trump‘s bought-and-paid-for Supreme Court hollowed out the Voting Rights Act, shredding the last guardrail standing between voters and the biggest power grab we’ve seen in modern political history. Republicans have been handed a license to discriminate against Black and Hispanic voters and shove them out of political power, district by district, state by state.

“Democratic success in Wisconsin will not just be about our state; it will be about ensuring Wisconsin stands ready to directly counter Republican efforts to disenfranchise Black and Latino voters’ constitutional right to fair representation. Every election was already an emergency—SCOTUS just made them five-alarm fires. Wisconsin must elect a Democratic Governor and Attorney General alongside majorities in the State Senate and Assembly to safeguard our democracy, or we will hand the GOP the pen to gerrymander as they have before and draw themselves an 8-0 congressional delegation.

“We have the opportunity to protect Wisconsinites’ first amendment right to vote and have their voices heard. But we can also expand health care access while lowering costs, properly fund our public schools and help bring down property taxes, and make the investments communities across Wisconsin need to achieve their full potential.

“This fight for our democracy and our future does not end at our state lines, and we will be ready to do whatever it takes to fight back against disenfranchisement in our state and across the nation.”
