The Historic Third Ward Association Celebrates 50 Years of Community, Creativity and Connection in Milwaukee’s Iconic Revitalized Warehouse District

MILWAUKEE — A milestone year is underway in the Historic Third Ward. The Historic Third Ward Association (HTWA) is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026, marking five decades of leadership, collaboration, and transformation in one of Milwaukee’s most vibrant neighborhoods.

Founded in 1976, the organization has played a crucial role in preserving the district’s historic character while fostering its evolution into a thriving hub for arts, culture, dining, shopping, and urban living. Over the past 50 years, the Historic Third Ward has grown from a largely underutilized warehouse district into one of the Midwest’s premier mixed-use neighborhoods — home to independent retailers, award-winning restaurants, creative entrepreneurs, residents, and cultural institutions.

“Fifty years marks the beginning of the collective effort that preserved and developed the Historic Third Ward into the dynamic neighborhood it is today,” says HTWA Executive Director Jim Plaisted. “It’s a moment to honor the people, stories, and investment that made that progress possible. The neighborhood today was the vision of the founders in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, and our charge is to continue this momentum into the future.”

The Early Days

The HTWA was formed at a pivotal moment in the neighborhood’s history — when civic leaders, business owners, and residents came together to advocate for preservation, thoughtful development, and community-driven revitalization. Since then, the organization has led marketing initiatives, supported small businesses, enhanced streetscapes, activated public spaces, and helped shape the district’s identity as Milwaukee’s arts and fashion district.

“The Third Ward is a shining example of nurturing a shared vision between private and public stakeholders for the last 50 years,” says Plaisted. “In response to a proposal by the local alderman and city officials to designate the declining area as an official ‘red light’ district in the 1970s, property and business owners rallied together to oppose the plan — leading to the formation of the HTWA in 1976.”

Cheers to 50 Years

The HTWA’s 50th anniversary celebration will officially kick off at the HTWA Annual Meeting on Thursday, April 30, with public festivities and commemorative programming launching in May. Throughout the year, residents and visitors can expect special events, neighborhood activations, historical storytelling, and limited-edition collaborations honoring the Ward’s past, present, and future.

Highlights include:

  • Anniversary street banners installed throughout the district in May
  • Elevated anniversary editions of the neighborhood’s annual programming and events, like the popular Christmas in the Ward celebration
  • The launch of a new event May 30-31 — “Shop, Sip & Savor” — celebrating local businesses in the Ward
  • Limited-edition Third Ward merchandise (created by local artist Whitney Nettles) available at select neighborhood retailers May-September
  • An incredible three-day festival in Catalano Square Aug. 7-9; details will be announced soon!

More details about the anniversary year’s special events and programming will be announced in the coming weeks.

Then & Now

From the development of the Riverwalk and adaptive reuse of historic warehouses to the opening of beloved neighborhood destinations such as the Milwaukee Public Market, the Historic Third Ward’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and community vision.

Today, the neighborhood continues to serve as a model for urban revitalization — balancing preservation with innovation — and maintaining its authentic character while welcoming new generations of entrepreneurs, residents, and visitors.

“Fifty years is a long time to do anything. What started as an idea for a small, historic area of Milwaukee has turned into the most effective neighborhood association in the City,” says Joseph Goode, Historic Third Ward Association Board President and managing partner of Laffey, Leitner & Goode LLC. “In cooperation with our friends at Business Improvement District #2, it’s important to celebrate our 50th year to remind everyone the Historic Third Ward is a place to visit and celebrate as a legacy neighborhood in a city on the rise.”

As the HTWA celebrates 50 years, the organization remains focused on strengthening community, supporting local businesses, and ensuring the Historic Third Ward continues to thrive for decades to come.

“As we celebrate 50 years, we’re reflecting on the vision and collaboration that shaped the Historic Third Ward into the vibrant mixed-use neighborhood it is today,” says Plaisted. “This milestone is an opportunity to honor the people, businesses, and partners who helped build the Ward — and to look ahead to the next chapter of creativity, culture, and community.”
