MADISON, WI – A new report by Northern News Now highlights the importance of Sen. Sarah Keyeski and Rep. Jenna Jacobson’s legislation, which seeks to target scammers utilizing AI. The forward-thinking proposal would criminalize attempts to target some of the state’s most vulnerable populations. The rise in AI must come with proactive legislation; holding scammers responsible for their predatory behavior is a necessary step towards a safer Wisconsin.

Northern News Now: Wisconsin bill targets AI deepfake scams with criminal penalties

  • “State Sen. Sarah Keyeski, D-Lodi, introduced a bill that would make it a misdemeanor to create and post AI deepfakes to harass people and a felony to use deepfakes to defraud someone of money.”
  • “‘Recently, criminals have been using AI more and more to impersonate different people,’ said Annette Zimmerman, assistant professor of philosophy at UW-Madison.”
  • “Keyeski said she modeled her bill after similar bipartisan legislation that passed in Pennsylvania.”
