Rep. Robyn Vining Statement on Assembly Bill 1

MADISON – Today, the Assembly Committee on Health met for the first time since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic for a public hearing and executive session on Assembly Bill 1. This bill was introduced by Assembly Speaker Vos. Representative Robyn Vining (D-Wauwatosa) issued the following statement in opposition of this legislation:

“This bill does not protect the people of Wisconsin from COVID-19. Wisconsinites have been waiting since April for action from the legislature. We must focus on responding to the health and economic concerns that this pandemic has brought to our state.

“This bill undermines the efforts by local government and school districts to respond to the pandemic. This bill does nothing to fight for the survival of our small businesses, does not provide needed support to our frontline healthcare workers, does not come alongside in support of our schools or childcare providers, and does not provide much needed fixes to our unemployment system. Above all, it does not do what we need to do to protect the health and safety of each and every Wisconsinite. Assembly Bill 1 is a political tool that does not respond to the needs of the people of Wisconsin.

“I have been ready for months to pass legislation that will provide relief and protections to the people of Wisconsin in response to this virus. The Assembly Democratic Caucus and Governor Evers have introduced legislation that includes provisions supported by the Republican leadership in the legislature. The time is now to act on legislative proposals that will protect the lives and livelihoods of the people of Wisconsin.”
