Youth Council to hear agencies’ funding requests for city youth programming

The Youth Council has a total of $99,845 in CDBG reprogramming funds available for allocation.

The City of Milwaukee Youth Council is expected to make allocation recommendations later TODAY (Wednesday, October 25) after hearing from agencies which have applied for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to be used for programs and projects benefiting city youths.

The allocation recommendations (to be forwarded to the Common Council’s Community and Economic Development Committee) are expected to be made during today’s Youth Council meeting at 3:00 p.m. in the third floor Council Chamber at City Hall. At the meeting, 10 agencies will present proposals and answer questions posed by Youth Council members.

The Youth Council has a total of $99,845 in CDBG reprogramming funds available for allocation. Those who have submitted requests for funding include:

  • Crossing Jordan Ministries – Requesting $25,000 to assist youth and young adults that currently have special needs, mental health as well as trauma informed Care specialist to help youth affected by abandonment, abuse, neglect, and trafficking.
  • Center for Self Sufficiency – Requesting $30,000 for an eight- month program that integrates group mentoring, personal development through outdoor experimental learning, and healthy relationship education.
  • Hearts for Harmony, Inc. – Requesting $30,437 for a Youth Entrepreneurship Program – 10 week course that will expose youth to various business components.
  • New Choices, LLC – Requesting $98,800 for multiple activities including a comprehensive mental health assessment and personalized treatment plans, case management, life skills training; civic engagement; and mental health counseling.
  • Neu Life Community Development – Requesting $20,000 for ARTREACH – an interactive creative arts program to instill a sense of awareness about human/sex trafficking in our community’s youth and to empower them to become peer spokespersons.
  • Running Rebels – Requesting $25,000 for a year round initiative to allow youths to participate in literacy enrichment and credit recovery courses. Program also includes cultural and social development, health and wellness, and career/college readiness components.
  • United Community Center – Requesting $15,000 for Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) – activities that include youth employment, career preparation, character development, and civic engagement and team work activities.
  • WestCare Wisconsin, Inc. – Requesting $40,000 for Live Li Hood – a year round initiative with activities including membership in the Youth Action Council (YAC), community outreach, job readiness, college readiness, reckless driving education and crime prevention training.
  • Wisconsin Community Services, Inc. – Requesting $30,000 for a year round At-Risk Youth Driver’s License Recovery initiative. Services include case management and civil court legal representation for youth who are experiencing active suspension and/or revocations to obtain or against a current Wisconsin Driver’s License.
  • Social Development Commission – Requesting $15,000 for a six-month program addressing mental health and ATODA in middle and high schools through monthly workshops. Partnerships with Hopkins Lloyd and North Division High School.
