Kevin Nicholson Silent as Republicans Raided Funding for King
Did Kevin Nicholson support Rep. Dale Kooyenga and D.C. Leah's votes to raid millions from the funds available to take care of Wisconsin's elderly veterans?
MADISON — This week, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel revealed that potential U.S. Senate candidate and member of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs board, Kevin Nicholson, “didn’t attend a Veterans Affairs board meeting at King in July 2016 or respond to emails with concerns about the home going back to at least February 2013.” He also claimed to have communicated with the administration but, “Nicholson didn’t provide specific examples of that communication beyond saying he had spoken with then-state veterans affairs secretary John Scocos.”
Nicholson’s lack of action begs the question: did Kevin Nicholson support Rep. Dale Kooyenga and D.C. Leah‘s votes to raid millions from the funds available to take care of Wisconsin’s elderly veterans?
Joint Finance Committee members D.C. Leah and Rep. Dale Kooyenga helped usher through Gov. Scott Walker‘s draconian budget cuts — including a $12 million raid from funding for Wisconsin Veterans Home at King last year and another $18 million funding raid scheduled to take place this year and the year after. And during budget negotiations this year, Republicans on the Joint Finance Committee rejected a Democratic proposal that would have prevented a $26 million funding raid.
“Our veterans have made tremendous sacrifices to keep us safe and they deserve the best possible care,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin spokesman Brandon Weathersby. “Kevin Nicholson must let the people of Wisconsin know if he supports the record of Republicans like D.C Leah and Rep. Dale Kooyenga who took tens of millions of dollars away from the care of elderly Wisconsin veterans.”
