MADISON – More than twenty-four hours after making multiple offensive comments during a CNN interview, Rep. Sean Duffy is yet to explain his comments. Duffy also hasn’t apologized to his constituents, the victims of the Quebec mosque attack, or the victims of the Emanuel AME Church shooting.
Duffy’s comments earned national headlines, including a scathing opinion piece from Roll Call’s Johnathan Allen. In the piece, Allen writes, “the Wisconsin Republican applauded the ‘good things that came from’ a white supremacist murdering nine black worshippers at a church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015. ‘Nikki Haley took down the Confederate flag,’ he chirped with excitement. ‘That was great!’ Never mind that Duffy has voted to defend the right of ROTCs to fly the battle banner of traitors.”
While Duffy would be happy to sweep his remarks, and his record, under the rug a story on his offensive remarks remains the top story on the website of Charleston newspaper Post and Courier.
“Of course the people of Charleston are deeply offended by Rep. Sean Duffy’s comments that ‘good’ things came from the deaths of nine innocent churchgoers from their very own community. ” Democratic Party of Wisconsin spokesman Brandon Weathersby said on Wednesday. “This may just be a political game for Duffy, another interview where he lost self-control, but this time he went too far. Rep. Duffy needs to apologize.”
