New Cermak Opens in Walker’s Point
The new store brings fresh food to residents.
Cermak Fresh Market opened Wednesday morning in the newly developed Freshwater Plaza on the northeast corner of S. 1st St. and E. Greenfield Ave. in Walker’s Point. Developed by Wangard Partners, Inc. and Dennis Klein, the area’s first full-line supermarket is owned by Michael Bousis who was thrilled to see the supermarket doors open. “It was challenging to get this deal done and to do what we did but with the help of everybody we did it and put a store in a neighborhood that was needed.”
Dozens of community members attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and were looking forward to finally having a grocery store to meet all their needs close to home. Walker’s Point residents have desired a full-line grocery store for years, and Cermak will meet those needs by specializing in ethnic foods and bringing fresh produce to residents.
Alderman Jose Perez spoke at the grand opening and said “I especially would like to thank Mike Bousis and the Cermak family. For one, the investment in our community, the vision that he had, and understanding that for years this community has been underserved and is a food desert.” He went on to say the residents of the area had been waiting a long time for development and these opportunities.
The Freshwater Plaza location is the second for Cermak in Wisconsin. The Illinois-based grocery store chain has a store just outside the city in West Milwaukee at 1541 Miller Park Way.
Wangard Partners began construction on Freshwater Plaza in 2015. Cermak Fresh Market will be open daily from 7 a.m to 10 p.m. and joins other Freshwater Plaza tenants incuding Sprint, UPS Store, LyLy Nails & Spa, Jimmy John’s, MODD by Luci and Tribeca Gallery Cafe & Books.
